“Wait a minute, he’s only 16 years old?!”

There’s a good chance, if you’re a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the headline that broke Friday containing news the team would be signing outfield prospect Shalin Polanco, got you out of your chair.

The reaction, although, came with mixed results. Most kids haven’t even applied to college at 16-years-old, let alone receive a signing bonus on over $2 million. His talent is more than apparent, but his age has left fans and critics of Pittsburgh’s front office skeptical. Remember baseball fans, this is how it works.

On this episode of Rum Bunter Radio Marty, Nick and Trey welcome in staff writer Jeffrey Cupp to discuss the Polanco deal, the fourteen other signings that took place on Friday and everything surrounding the Pittsburgh Pirates this week. It should be noted this episode was recorded a few hours before Joe Musgrove was traded to the San Diego Padres.

Turley out, Tony in. After being designated for assignment last week, the Pittsburgh Pirates traded reliever Nik Turley to the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations. As he hits the West Coast, Tony Stokes Jr. comes east from Detroit to join the Pirates, looking to provide depth offensively.

The crew breaks down these deals, and discusses the signing of former World Series champion Wilmer Difo. What role will the five year mlb-vet serve in Pittsburgh, and how soon do the Pirates make a move to send current utility infielder Adam Frazier packing?

As the trade market continues to heat up, and stars like Luis Castillo wait to find out their future, names like Andrew Benintendi peak the interest of Pirates fans. Is the Cherington connection enough to bring “Benny” to Pittsburgh this season?

To wrap up this week’s show, Jeff shares more about himself and his story with Rum Bunter, before Marty gives an update on the guys down under.

Batten the hatches, clear the decks, Pirates baseball creeps closer and RBR episode 37 is here.
