After watching Kyle Schwarber and Jorge Polanco sign with other teams, this hyped-up Pirates offseason has been quite disapointing. Gregory Soto has been the only major league addition to this team, and he isn't even a hitter. The only real offensive addition the Pirates have made is Jhostynxon Garcia, acquired from the Red Sox, but Ben Cherington isn't expecting an immediate impact from him at the big league level.
Garcia still remains a top 100 prospect, and he is spending his winter playing baseball in Venezuela to improve. The Pirates planned to give him until the 21st of December to play down in Winter Ball, but his time was cut short this weekend.
Garcia was pulled from Friday night's contest with quad discomfort. Right now, it is just a day-to-day issue, but it is tough to see the Pirates letting him finish out his last week of winter ball given the risk of a bigger injury.
There wasn't a major sample size to take away from his winter league stint, as he only played in three games. Garcia was off to a phenomenal start, though, picking up five hits across nine at-bats while striking out three times. This injury does set him back, and given that they have made no other offensive additions, a major injury would really hurt this offseason plan.
Pirates' newest offensive addition Jhostynxon Garcia leaves with quad injury in his winter league game and is day-to-day.
It's still the offseason, so no need to fully panic. If it does end up being something serious, then it is valid to worry. Signing Mike Yastrzemski would have provided the major league stability the Pirates so desperately needed to aid in Nixon's development, but he signed with the Braves, leaving the Pirates without many options to bring in for their outfield.
The outfield depth in Triple-A isn't strong, either, so the Pirates still have a lot of work to do this offseason. They need to add two impact bats, some depth guys, and another reliever.
Pittsburgh needs to hope that Garcia's injury is minor so they don't need to pull off a flurry of the same old transactions. If they need too more depth because of this injury, the money needed to bring in a Kazuma Okamoto or Ryan O'Hearn may go to signing Tommy Pham, Adam Frazier, and another washed up utility guy, just like last year. Please be okay, Garcia.
