The Pittsburgh Pirates made a series of roster moves Thursday that underscored the reality of where the club currently stands: scrambling to patch holes while hoping some fresh faces can provide a spark.
First, the good news: outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez is back in the Major Leagues after the Pirates recalled their No. 9 prospect from Triple-A Indianapolis. Valdez immediately finds himself in the starting lineup Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, batting in right field as Pittsburgh looks for answers following Oneil Cruz’s placement on the injured list.
Valdez's first taste of the majors last month was brief but memorable. Although he hit just .125 in five games, both of his first two big-league hits left the yard. The 22-year-old drove in five runs during that short stint and showed exactly why the Pirates remain excited about his power potential.
Since returning to Indianapolis, Valdez has continued to do what he has done throughout his climb through the system and hit for power. He enters Thursday slashing .255/.388/.526 with 13 home runs, 13 doubles and 38 RBI at Triple-A.
With Cruz sidelined for at least the next several weeks, the Pirates need players capable of changing a game with one swing, and Valdez fits that description. Whether he can make enough contact to earn regular playing time remains the biggest question, but the opportunity is certainly there.
The corresponding move was less noteworthy. Infielder Davis Wendzel heads back to Indianapolis (arguably where he should have been this whole time) after going hitless in four at-bats during a brief four-day stay in Pittsburgh.
Today’s lineup against lefty Justin Wrobleski. Esmerlyn Valdez starts and bats sixth, while Rafael Flores starts. Last night’s hero Tyler Callihan, hitting .200 against lefties, sits.

Pirates call in reinforcements as Endy Rodríguez injury status remains unclear
While Valdez's promotion represents optimism, another development at PNC Park raised fresh concerns.
Prospect Shawn Ross was spotted with a locker in the Pirates clubhouse and has joined the club on the taxi squad. While no corresponding move has been announced, the timing is difficult to ignore.
Endy Rodríguez exited Wednesday night's game against the Dodgers with left hip discomfort, creating yet another potential injury concern for a roster that can hardly afford one.
The Pirates are already operating with limited catching depth. Joey Bart remains sidelined with a foot injury, while Henry Davis is away on paternity leave. That leaves Rafael Flores in position to start behind the plate Thursday.
If Rodríguez's injury proves minor, Ross could simply be insurance. But if the hip issue requires an IL stint, Pittsburgh may be forced into yet another roster shuffle.
That's been the story of the Pirates' season lately. Just when one roster move creates a reason for optimism — such as Valdez receiving another chance to establish himself — another reminds everyone how thin the margin for error has become.
For now, the Pirates will hope Valdez can provide a jolt to an offense missing Cruz's bat while they wait for updates on Rodríguez.
