The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced yet another coaching hire, appointing Miguel Perez as their new MLB bullpen coach. He replaces Justin Meccage, who was fired in October along with former hitting coach Andy Haines.
A former catcher in the Pirates organization, Perez spent the last three seasons as manager in Triple-A Indianapolis. He has coached 30 players who have made their major league debuts with the Pirates and will now get his first opportunity to coach at the big league level.
Pirates' Paul Skenes hits big in pre-arbitration bonus pool
Pirates pitching phenom Paul Skenes is among the highest-paid players in the 2024 pre-arbitration bonus pool at $2,152,057, per Mike Axisa of CBS Sports. Skenes was awarded $1.5 million for finishing third in the National League Cy Young race, while the rest was calculated by a WAR-based formula.
Under the current CBA, the bonus pool is designed to give pre-arbitration players an opportunity to make more than their league-minimum salaries. Players receive their bonus based on achievements, but can only receive one bonus. For example, had he not been a Cy Young finalist, Skenes would have been able to earn a $750,000 bonus for being named to the All-MLB first-team and winning the National League Rookie of the Year.
Skenes is one of eight players who received a seven-figure bonus for 2024. He is second only to Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals, who netted a bonus of $3,077,595.
Pirates' Oneil Cruz has rough start at the plate in Dominican Winter League
After a midseason position change from shortstop to center field, Oneil Cruz has been assigned by the Pirates to Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League to gain more experience in the outfield role.
At the plate, Cruz has slashed just .125/.177/.125 with four walks, an RBI and a stolen base over four games. Appearing primarily as a designated hitter, he has only logged seven total innings at center field.
Hopefully, Cruz gets more opportunities in the outfield this winter, considering that it's, you know, the primary reason he's there. In the meantime, his numbers at the plate indicate that he might need to put in some extra work on his hitting, too.
