The Pittsburgh Pirates announced another round of spring roster cuts Tuesday, bringing their Major League spring training roster to 50 with Opening Day just over two weeks away.

The Pirates optioned right-handed pitchers Mike Burrows, Braxton Ashcraft and Chase Shugart, and infielders Liover Peguero, Tsung-Che Cheng and Enmanuel Valdez to Triple-A Indianapolis. Additionally, they reassigned right-handed pitchers Isaac Mattson, Ryder Ryan and Eddy Yean, catchers Aaron McKeithan and Omar Alfonzo, and infielder Malcom Nuñez to minor league spring training.

Among the latest round of cuts are several of Pittsburgh's Top-20 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline, including Ashcraft (No. 6), Burrows (No. 15), Cheng (No. 17) and Alfonzo (No. 19). Burrows made his Major League debut with the Pirates last September, and it's likely that we will see him, Ashcraft and/or Cheng in Pittsburgh at some point this year.

Former Pirates trade deadline pickup Jalen Beeks signs with Astros

Left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks, whom the Pirates acquired from the Colorado Rockies to bolster their bullpen depth at the 2024 MLB trade deadline, agreed to a minor-league contract with the Houston Astros for the 2025 season.

Beeks turned in a 3.92 ERA with three holds and a save across 20 2/3 innings for the Pirates after the trade from Colorado last season. However, after the Pirates added a pair of veteran lefty relievers this offseason in Caleb Ferguson and Tim Mayza, a reunion with Beeks never felt particularly likely.

Pittsburgh acquired Beeks from the Rockies in exchange for minor-league reliever Luis Peralta, who was in Double-A Altoona at the time. After Colorado promoted Peralta to Triple-A Albuquerque and ultimately selected contract in late August, he went on to shine in his Major League debut campaign, with a 0.73 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings in 15 outings with the Rockies.

Between Peralta's success in Colorado, Beeks' departure from Pittsburgh and the club's decision to non-tender outfielder Bryan De La Cruz – who is now vying for a big league roster spot with the Atlanta Braves – Pittsburgh's 2024 trade deadline haul continues to age like milk.
