It looks like Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes will be joined by a familiar face at MLB All-Star Week in Atlanta.

Slugging Pirates outfielder Oneil Cruz will have the chance to showcase his otherworldly power on baseball's biggest stage next week after announcing Tuesday that he will be participating in this year's Home Run Derby at Truist Park.

Cruz made the announcement himself on his Instagram account, using his nickname, “The Monkey,” and captioning the post, “Monkey Business. Swingin’ through the Derby like a wild monkey on a mission. Barrels, bombs, and banana peels everywhere. Let’s make a mess at the Home Run Derby.”

Nobody hits the ball harder than Cruz – literally.

The 26-year-old leads all Pirates hitters with 15 home runs this season, in addition to leading all MLB hitters in average exit velocity (108.3 mph) and bat speed (78.6 mph). He crushed a home run on May 25 that traveled 432 feet at an exit velocity of 122.9 mph – the hardest recorded hit in the Statcast era (since 2015).

Cruz’s longest home run on record is a 472-foot blast he hit off of Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt on July 27, 2024. His longest this year was on April 23 off of Los Angeles Angels righty Jack Kochanowicz and went an estimated 463 feet.

Cruz is otherwise batting a rather underwhelming .203 with a .717 OPS and a 1.0 WAR through 80 games for the Pirates this season. In three career appearances at Truist Park, he is 2-for-8 with a home run, two walks, a pair of RBI and a 1.025 OPS.

Cruz is the fifth participant to throw his hat into the ring for this year’s derby. He joins Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood, Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. and Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton.

Cruz will be the seventh Pirates player in franchise history to compete in the derby since it began in 1985, joining Bobby Bonilla (1990), Barry Bonds (1992), Jason Bay (2005), Andrew McCutchen (2012), Pedro Alvarez (2013) and Josh Bell (2019). No Pirates player has ever won the event.
