Pirates Prospect Update: Jhostynxon Garcia injury, Edward Florentino milestone, Tony Blanco Jr.

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia was placed on the 7-day injured list Thursday at Triple-A Indianapolis with an undisclosed injury, adding another question mark to the organization’s outfield depth.

Garcia was optioned to Indianapolis on Aug. 14 after spending more than two weeks with the Pirates. He had appeared in three games since returning to Triple-A, collecting three hits and driving in one run across 11 plate appearances without drawing a walk during that stretch.

Garcia has struggled to establish himself offensively during his opportunities in Pittsburgh this season. In 48 at-bats over 20 major-league games with the Pirates, he has hit .167/.200/.188.

The Pirates haven't disclosed the nature or severity of Garcia’s injury, so there is currently no clear timetable for his return. His placement on the seven-day IL will temporarily remove another potential depth option as Pittsburgh navigates the final weeks of the season.

Top Pirates prospect Edward Florentino notches first 20-homer season with grand slam

Edward Florentino continues to add to what has become a breakout power season in the Pirates' farm system.

Florentino launched the first grand slam of his professional career Sunday, giving High-A Greensboro a huge lift in the 11th inning of their victory over Bowling Green.

The blast also added another milestone to an already impressive season for the 19-year-old. Florentino now has 23 home runs, the first time he has reached the 20-homer mark in his professional career. Among teenage prospects, only one player has hit more this season.

That kind of production helps explain why Florentino has climbed to No. 35 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list and emerged as one of the most intriguing young bats in the Pirates’ system.

The home run total is particularly notable considering Florentino is doing this against older competition. Power development can be unpredictable for teenage prospects, but Florentino is already showing an ability to impact the baseball consistently enough to separate himself. Sunday’s grand slam was merely the latest example.

The Pirates have several highly regarded young hitters moving through the system, and Florentino’s rapidly developing power has made him one of the names increasingly difficult to overlook.

Pirates prospect Tony Blanco Jr. continues power display with 2 multi-homer games

Tony Blanco Jr.’s enormous raw power has never been difficult to see. This season, the Pirates prospect is finally translating it into consistent game production.

Blanco was outstanding this past week for High-A Greensboro, collecting eight hits in his previous 17 at-bats. Four of those hits left the ballpark, including consecutive two-homer performances Saturday and Sunday against Bowling Green.

The 21-year-old first baseman now has 23 home runs in just 70 games with Greensboro while batting .264 with 54 RBI and a career-best .932 OPS.

Blanco's August surge has been even more impressive. He's hitting .370 with seven homers and a 1.391 OPS across 43 at-bats this month. The 6-foot-7, 243-pound hitter has also hit more home runs away from hitter-friendly Greensboro than at home, making the production harder to dismiss as a product of his environment.

There are still obvious areas for Blanco to continue developing, particularly his strikeout rate, defense and ability to remain healthy. But after injuries limited him to 28 games at Low-A Bradenton last season, simply staying on the field has allowed Blanco to make meaningful progress.

If this version of the power sticks, his prospect stock could keep climbing quickly.
