This Pirates prospect is forcing his way into Pittsburgh's pitching plans

Typically speaking, this is the time of year that Pittsburgh Pirates fans really hone in on the minors and begin to dream of which youngster will be the next great hope for the franchise. 2026 is no typical year. Not only are the Pirates actually competitive, but the farm system isn't brimming with talent as it has in years past.

Of course, there are still some exciting youngsters, but once you get past Seth Hernandez and Edward Florentino, it's more projection over game-changing potential, though Murf Gray is making a strong case to join that duo as a potential future star.

However, down in Indianapolis, there's a young hurler making a name for himself. Lefty Connor Wietgrefe earned Player of the Month honors for the month of July, and the accolade was certainly well deserved.

For the month, Wietgrefe went 4-2 with a 1.98 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts over 36 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old has posted a 2.61 ERA overall in Indianapolis that's come over a total of eight starts and 48 1/3 innings. He began his year at Double-A Altoona and, in total, has a combined 3.13 ERA over 115 innings pitched.

A seventh-round draft pick of the Pirates in 2024, the highlight of Wietgrefe's season might be his July 12 start against the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers' Triple-A affiliate), when he tossed eight shutout innings and allowed only one hit and no walks.

Wietgrefe has been on our radar for a while, posting a strong finish to the 2025 season. With that said, he hasn't been the recipient of much fanfare, ranking 29th in Pittsburgh's system per MLB Pipeline.

Despite being more or less an afterthought, he might be able to help the Pirates down the stretch as they work towards earning their first playoff berth since 2015.

Connor Wietgrefe could mitigate the incoming innings crisis that Pirates starters like Braxton Ashcraft will face

Pittsburgh's rotation has been an interesting beast this season. Paul Skenes got off to a vintage start, but he hasn't been Skenes-like for a while now. Mitch Keller was supposed to be the picture of consistency before going on the IL, but he's been anything but in 2026.

The Pirates have been fortunate to have several options for the rotation, and have squeezed just enough out of them to stay afloat, but youngsters like Braxton Ashcraft, Bubba Chandler, and Jared Jones all could start to hit a wall.

For Ashcraft, that may have already happened. He came into the season with a career-high of 118 innings pitched last season, as injuries have played a role for much of his career. He's already at 127 1/3 frames so far this year, and with a 7.78 ERA in July, might be running out of gas.

Chandler is getting close to his high water mark as well, and Jones is coming back from Tommy John surgery and should be handled with care.

This isn't just about getting through the rest of the season, either. If Pittsburgh makes the playoffs, they'll add even more innings to these inexperienced arms.

That's where Wietgrefe comes in. He can come up and eat some innings down the stretch, and should be able to keep the team competitive. While he wasn't highly touted coming out of the University of Minnesota, he was noted as being a pitcher with a high degree of polish.

His game is commanding the zone and executing on location, while mixing through a repertoire that includes five pitches: a low -90s fastball, changeup, cutter, slider, and sweeper. He'll leverage that deep arsenal to keep hitters off balance.

In a way, he's the perfect foil for the existing power arms in the rotation, and as a lefty in a sea of right-handers, he'd provide a different look. That might also provide the Pirates with a slight advantage, as he could serve as a change of pace. The big win, though, would be if he can eat innings and keep the team competitive in an effort to make sure that the young arms aren't completely gassed come October.
