This recent roster cut would be perfect last-minute reunion for Pirates

Opening Day is just about here, and the Pirates' roster appears to be complete. Every team is going through roster changes following the end of spring training, and that resulting shuffle is where the Pirates should look to improve their depth. There are some solid players who've been left off of rosters this week, and that could aid Pittsburgh in grabbing solid depth at a cheap price.

The Pirates are deep with left-handed relievers so far, with Caleb Ferguson, Tim Mayza, Ryan Borucki, and Joey Wentz all involved. That marks four ticketed for the major league bullpen, which might be a little more than anyone wanted. With a 40-man spot needed for Borucki, though, Wentz could be DFA'd to make room. That would leave three, and that seems like a better number of southpaws for the bullpen.

Even as that number rises, there might still be an upgrade opportunity on the open market, as well as a reunion in the cards, following the Angels' recent DFA of Angel Perdomo, a left-handed reliever who pitched for the Pirates in 2023.

He is in the same boat as Wentz, with no minor-league options remaining, but if they plan on holding four in the big league bullpen, they should absolutely take Perdomo over their incumbent. The most ideal scenario would be Perdomo clearing waivers and the Pirates adding him on a minor-league deal, but regardless, Pittsburgh should try to get him back.

Pirates should reunite with Angel Perdomo following his recent DFA from the Angels.

Perdomo missed 2024 following surgery to his elbow, which is a shame because his 2023 was very dominant. In that season, he posted an ERA of 3.72 (xERA of 2.75) with an FIP of 3.01 and a K/9 of 13.66. His WHIP reached 1.10, stemming from an opposing batting average of .204 and a walk rate of 9.4%. He generated a solid whiff rate of 32% and limited opponents to an average exit velocity of 88.2 mph.

He also put together a solid spring, tossing 10 innings and allowing two earned runs. Opponents batted .200 against him, and he struck out eight batters in the small sample size. Even after being DFA'd, he brings a solid arm from the left side and he could be a sold piece towards the Pirates bullpen in 2025.

Perdomo is likely a better option than Wentz, and if the contract details work out the way the Pirates want them to (minor-league deal), then this pickup could truly work out for Pittsburgh in a positive way.
