Among the myriad problems facing the Pittsburgh Pirates this season, one woefully misguided sect of the fanbase seems to think that franchise legend Andrew McCutchen is one of them.

David Todd, an X user who frequently posts about the Pirates, took to the social media platform Tuesday to express his belief that the Pirates should stop making the 37-year-old former National League MVP a "priority."

"Cutch deserves all the love he gets, but this season is basically already over," Todd wrote. "Cutch has a 92 wRC+ so far this season & is a below-average OF at this point. It's not like they are sitting Juan Soto when he doesn't play."

"Play him, don't play him, he shouldn't be a priority if there is any other player that they can give ABs & try develop: Suwinski, Davis, Cook, etc. What they should do, right now, is trade him to a competitive team IF he would be interested & there are any takers."

McCutchen, for his part, didn't take too kindly to any part of Todd's message – so much so that he re-posted it with a tongue-in-cheek retort.

"Well thank God ur not a GM," McCutchen wrote. "Didnt know the season only lasted thru the month of April."

McCutchen followed up by saying that X is a "dark and depressing place" and that he plans to take a break and "go touch grass." Sound advice for us all, really.

Despite being in and out of the lineup during the first month of the season, McCutchen has remained one of the Pirates' most consistent performers. He has slashed .246/.348/.404 for an OPS of. 752 in 18 games this season with 14 hits – including three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI – in 57 at-bats.

At this point in his career, McCutchen is what he is – a slightly above league average bat. He may not be the Pirates' future, but he's better than anything they have right now. The Pirates have more than enough problems right now; we don't need to start creating ones that don't exist.
