The Pittsburgh Pirates have a lot of work to do if they hope to improve upon their dissapointing 2025 season.
In ESPN's first Stock Watch of the offseason, Bradford Doolittle had the Pirates sitting at 26th in the league following the World Series. The Pirates finished the 2025 season 27th out of 30 teams.
""With a lineup that currently projects to feature only three above-average hitters, upgrading should not be difficult.""Bradford Doolittle
To put it plainly, the Pirates' lineup is so poor that any move will be an improvement. Doolittle projects that Pittsburgh will average 73.6 wins, which is a slight improvement from their 71.6 win average from this past season. The Pirates were given an 8.7% chance to make the playoffs with a lowly 0.1% chance at winning the World Series in 2026.
How can the Pirates improve their World Series odds?
It doesn't take an expert to realize that the Pirates need to add offensive firepower to their lineup if they have any shot at improving in 2026. With that being said, the organization has already struck out trying to acquire Kyle Schwarber, Josh Naylor, Jorge Polanco and Pete Alonso in free agency.
Doolittle noted that, at the very least, the Pirates' pitching situation should be a positive sign for next season.
""Even with Jared Jones still recovering from elbow surgery, the Pirates' Paul Skenes-led rotation is ripe with potential""Bradford Doolittle
Budding superstar Konnor Griffin also has the possibility of being called up following spring training. Despite only having played 20 games at Double-A, it is very clear that Griffin has the potential to be an instant game changer at the major league level.
Outside of some top prospects and a killer rotation, though, the Buccos have to spend and spend big in free agency and on the trade market. If they don't, they cannot hope to get much better, although 26th out of 30 is still an improvement from 27th, and baby steps are usually required with a franchise like the Pirates.
