One of the biggest heists of the offseason was the Pittsburgh Pirates dealing Johan Oviedo for a package headlined by Jhostynxon Garcia. The idea that Pittsburgh could take an injury-prone starter in Oviedo, who made just nine starts last season, and swap him for the No. 85 prospect in baseball is a massive win. Even better when you consider that Garcia is ready to contribute to the big league roster right now.
In typical Pirates' fashion, not everything could go smoothly, with Garcia suffering a quad injury while playing winter ball in his native Venezuela. Fortunately, the injury isn't expected to be major, and while it might have cut down some extra reps for the youngster, he'll still be in position to compete for a roster spot come spring training.
Even if the Pirates deem that The Password could benefit from a bit more minor league seasoning, the fact of the matter is he's coming, and his recent comments on social media should have every Pirates fan fired up over the 23-year-old's vision for the future.
Jhostynxon Garcia's inspirational social media post is exactly what Pirates fans wanted to hear
Character goes a long way in the sport. It's what helps players get through the tough times and the slumps. It's what keeps them focused on the prize. Having the right outlook can be the difference between a talented youngster flopping or excelling once they get the chance to finally realize a dream they've clung to since they were a small child.
So when Garcia posted on Instagram, it should have become readily apparent that not only does the kid have his head screwed on right, he's focused on what matters most to everyone in Pirates world — an eventual World Series championship.
Garcia thanked the Red Sox for their belief in him, which is always nice, but knowing where he comes from shows even greater character and motivation. Garciasigned with the Red Sox as a 16-year-old for $350,000 in 2019. $350,000 might not seem like life-changing money, but for a kid whose country was in an economic freefall, the sum held a whole lot of power.
2019 marked the beginning of the height of the crisis in Venezuela, and at that point in time, four million people had already fled as basic needs like food and medicine had become incredibly scarce, and crime and violence were on the rise. It wasn't just the money for Garcia; it was the opportunity.
The Red Sox gave him that opportunity to truly have a future, to really help his family, to survive in what had become a catastrophic crumbling of his nation's economy and institutions. So when he thanked them in his post, it rang as more heartfelt than just a general platitude.
Now, Garcia is grateful to the Pirates for the opportunity. "Now it’s time for the next chapter. I’m excited to join the Pittsburgh Pirates and get to work. New city, new colors, new goals — and yes, a new password. I’m all in on helping bring a World Series back to Pittsburgh," he wrote.
A new password, indeed. Pirates fans should be thrilled with the acquisition from a talent standpoint, but also for a personality perspective, and if Garcia's hopes to bring the Commissioner's Trophy to Pittsburgh come true, he'll delight the fans even more.
