Pittsburgh Pirates probable pitchers and starting lineups vs. San Francisco Giants, May 22
Pirates and Giants fans are in for a treat today with a great pitchers' duel.
The Pirates kicked off their mini home stand against a struggling Giants team that has been hit with the injury bug. Weathering a tough start to Game 1, the Pirates mounted a late-game comeback, securing a hard-fought victory in the opener. Now looking to solidify a series win, they will send one of the better pitchers in the National League, Jared Jones, to square off against the reigning National League Cy Young winner in what is surely going to be a tight pitching duel.
Probable Starters
- RHP Jared Jones (3-4, 2.89 ERA) will get the start in the second game against the Giants. He has been one of the better pitchers in the National League so far, throwing five innings in every start, as well as at least six in his last three starts. He might play himself into contention for the Rookie of the Year award. He has elite stuff and will get another chance to showcase it against the Giants. Last time out, he went five innings, allowing six hits, three runs, one walk and just three strikeouts. This time around, Jones will look to limit the damage after giving up two home runs, and avoid more contact after the season low three strikeouts.
- LHP Blake Snell (0-3, 11.57 ERA) will counter against the Bucs' stud. The former National League Cy Young was the talk of the offseason, after there were many reports of him looking for a mega-deal. Signing with the Giants late in the year, he didn't get a typical spring training to shake the rust off. This has led to him shaking that rust off in the regular season, and it looks like there's a lot of rust! Snell struggled in his first three starts, as he was unable to get through five innings. He has given up three, seven and five runs in each of his three starts while only striking out five, four and three before being placed on the Injured List with a left adductor strain. Activated to start against the Pirates, he will look to get things back on track, while the Bucs will need to continue to beat down on the struggling lefty.
